Things To Do In Hawkshead

The Fitzwilliam Fine Art Galleries offer a unique collection of quality and original fine paintings of the Lake District across two locations; Hawkshead and Grasmere. Offering a mixture of contemporary and traditional paintings by established artists in the heart of the Lake District, the Hawkshead Gallery is one of its top attractions.

Alongside the Gallery, there are a number of other top attractions you may wish to explore while you are within the local area. We’ve listed our top places to explore below:

Grizedale Forest

In the heart of the Lake District Work Heritage site, Grizedale forest offers an unrivalled day out for everyone. With breath-taking views, stunning artwork and endless forest trails. Keep your eyes peeled for unique sculptures dotted around the forest and enjoy all that Grizedale has to offer.

Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s House

Hill Top was Beatrix Potter’s most beloved place, packed full of her favourite things. Beatrix left it just as she wanted it for visitors to enjoy. The surrounding countryside was inspiration for many of her famous children’s tales, and you will see why she loved it so much. They also offer guided tours if you would like to know more.

Latterbarrow

Latterbarrow is a great circular walk direct from Hawkshead. Breathe in the lake air and get a sense of why the artists love the area so much. A fairly easy going walk for the most part, rewarded with great views and photo opportunities.

St Michel and All Angels Church

If you’re looking for a sense of history within the area, a walk around the St Michael and All Angels Church is the ideal choice. Having been added to over the years, there is a lot of different architecture and decorative elements to enjoy. There is an ancient tomb to admire and a detailed map of the graveyard too. It is well maintained and well worth a visit.

Brantwood

Brantwood is a 250acre estate to explore with a well-maintained house and gardens, overlooking Lake Coniston. There is also a café to whet the appetite as you soak in the view.

Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery

Esthwaite water trout fishery is the largest stocked lake in the north west providing excellent brown trout and probably some of the best pike fishing in the country. You can fish from the bank or boat on a day ticket basis.

The Chocolate Factory

If you have little ones this is the ideal choice! Offering chocolate workshops, this unique and interactive experience for children is truly unforgettable. Relax whilst the children make delicious chocolate creations to take home, as well as their apron and hair net.

Go Ape Grizedale

Always a popular day out, this site is built on the side of a hill, adding to its great height! You can enjoy an epic Tree Top Adventure, swinging through the canopy, 200 meters across the top of Grizedale Beck where you can marvel at the 18-meter Douglas Firs. There is also Go Ape Forest Segway to enjoy, as well as Tree Top Junior Adventure for the younger ones. You can easily spend a whole morning or afternoon here.
